Bigger is not always better

7 December 2023

Enjoyable quiz last night with a good turnout and some impressive scoring on the musical beer round.

I think it is fair to say that the Elm Tree and quiz has a genuinely broad demographic, from first year students to retired locals. And one of the quirks of the quiz is that Teams get an answer sheet with a Team number. So no need to think up a poor or mildly offensive punning team name. A running total of teams scores is read out at the end of each round. So you know where you stand. But you may not always know which other teams are having a particularly good, or bad, night.

Last night’s winning performance deserves acknowledgement. Teams much greater in number and years were put to shame by Eve and Jack, Philosophy and Maths undergraduates respectively, who double-handedly won both the quiz with a score of 32 and the Beer Round. Hats off to them. Chapeau!

And two housekeeping announcements.

The quiz will be on in the pub on 13th and 20th of December. It will take its annual break between Christmas and New Year – there will be no quiz on Wednesday 27th December. But there will be a quiz posted online to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

And we will re-start on Wednesday 3rd January with a new book of the moment, George Orwell’s 1984.

Cheers
