The motivations of a quiz setter

Hi. Trust everyone is well. I’m sure we all have our different reasons for enjoying pub quizzes, whether it is a competitive streak, curiosity about general knowledge or simply sociability. Most likely a blend of all three.

But why set quizzes? I think it starts from doing and enjoying quizzes and then beginning to analyse what it is that makes a good quiz and enjoying well-constructed questions.

Whilst the intention is not to ask the impossible, the Elm Tree Quiz is nonetheless pitched at the more challenging end of the scale. Or as one occasional participant put it: “non-standard” questions!

That said, any suggestions about subjects for rounds are always welcome.

Ultimately, however, the role of a quiz setter is a little like that of the crossword setter: it is “to lose gracefully”.

Hope you enjoy this week’s quiz: win, lose or draw.
