Literature and art

19 October 2023

Very busy, and a little noisy and hectic, last night. 17 teams and over eighty quizzers.

The Word Round this week acknowledges the return to Durham of the First Folio, the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, which was stolen from Palace Green Library in 1998. One Raymond Scott from Washington, Tyne and Wear was convicted of handling stolen goods and removing it to the USA where he claimed he had found it in Cuba in the ownership of the family of an ex-bodyguard of Fidel Castro.

And in order to complete round 4 you will need the Arnolfini Portrait (below) in front of you.

Relative newcomers to the quiz had a top night, winning with 32 assisted by a brilliant 10/10 on the final General Knowledge round, and they also won the Beer Round with admirable knowledge of posters advertising Shakespeare. The Old(er) Guard will need to up their game.

Cheers
Frank
