Hi. Trust everyone is well.
This week’s quiz sees us heading towards the end of Candide. It is the antepenultimate question (making last week’s the preantepenultimate for those interested in that sort of thing). From 9 September we will have a new Book of the Moment, selected from the runners-up in the last vote.
Cue drum roll… it will be The Crow Trap by Ann Cleeves.
Three very different women come together at isolated Baikie’s Cottage on the North Pennines to complete an environmental survey. Rachael, the team leader; Anne, a botanist; and Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman, hiding plenty of her own secrets. Rachael arrives first where she discovers the body of her friend, Bella Furness. Bella, it appears, has committed suicide – a verdict Rachael refuses to accept. When another death occurs, a fourth woman enters the picture – the unconventional Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope . . .
This also gives me the opportunity to put the record straight in respect of my recent question about fictional DCIs and acknowledge that in the books Vera Stanhope is a Detective Inspector whilst in the TV series she has been elevated to Detective Chief Inspector. Thanks to Ann via Roger and Jean for putting me right! I think a round on police ranks is due soon as my penance. So start swotting up on your epaulettes, bars, pips, crowns and crests…
